The story:
Two years ago a friend of mine called me about a friend of his that needed someone to temperarly look after their cat (named Waldo) while they find a new appartment to move into that would accept pets.
They had called my friend first, but he couldn't do so, because he already has a cat and feared they wouldn't get along. A teenager of the family, or the owner, of the cat sounded despirate when they called me. She was in tears because she was afraid of having to send the cat to the shelter. Not liking the sound of it I wanted to care for the cat and asked my dad and pleaded with my mom.
My mom was reluctant from the start but obliged when I convinced her it'd only be for two weeks that we'd have the cat.
They came a few days later with a huge cat in their arms, and set us up with a litter bin and some food.
Well they came back only once to check on the amimal. The cat was sick with an ear and eye infection when we got him so we did take him to the vet once and my dad made a big fuss because he wasn't paying and they weren't going to check the cat unless they got payed right away. He called the previous owners and demanded they come over to pay for their animal. That lasted over an hour. They never came and my dad charged the fee. I wonder if mabe that may have scared the owners from ever returning? BTW the meds seemed to do little. Poor Waldo seems to always have a chronic ear and eye problem, even though the follow-up visit that year didn't reveal anything to be causing the discomfort. We guessed that it could be allergies.
Now they have moved a year ago and we have no way of reaching them. Past attempts to call them failed because they never answered their voicemail.
Honestly I never really wanted them to come back anyway. I love the cat dearly. My mom worked away from the house as a live-in caregiver. She'd grunt and complain whenever she visited, but overall she had little power or say in the cat.
Well ever since December 13 2005, that all changed when the client she loved and cared for passed away and she had to move back into the family.
In the span of two years the cat has became like family and been like my best friend who I love to snuggle and tease. I'd be heartbroken without him.
For that reason is probably what keeps my mom from making the cat disappear when I'm gone or forcing me to get rid of him.
I'm in a pickle. I really don't want to give up Waldo, but I am very sick of my mom yelling at the cat and occasionally threatening to kick him, suck him up with the vac, and all sorts of vile comments passing from her mouth. I have to grab the cat and seperate him from my mom on occasion because he likes to mew and cry at her for food when she's doing laundry. I can't forget to mention there is a medical reason for her not liking the cat, though I think she's using it as in excuse, perhaps to cover up some pain she had about having to give up a childhood pet that got hit by a car. Both mom and I have major sinus allergies to a variety of things from dust to pollon and dander. Both of us are tested positive to be allergic to cat dander. We have about the same degree of allergic reaction (according to a test long ago). I have put up with some discomfort because I love the cat. My mom doesn't.
I was hoping that if we kept the cat in spite of her whining and yelling, she'd eventually get over it and warm up to the cat, but I've waited over a month and that's not happening.
Also Waldo is two years overdue for an anual vet appointment and I'm not getting any support whatsoever in paying for it. He also suffers problem with twitching his head and limbs when he's laying down relaxed. (he doesn't seem distressed when it happens so I think I can rule out epolepsy sp?) That was a minor thing that he had the first year we had him but seems to be getting more frequent and affecting more than a single front leg.
Yeah this is tough and I'm not sure if you can offer any help really, but at least I feel a tiny bit better getting this rant off my chest.

Apologies for the crappy mug. The sunlight was bright.
